Check out how the foresters of the 1940s felled and logged giant Californian Redwoods using little more than sharp axes, rope and their wits. Handling and transporting the giant logs required plenty of skill and ingenuity. Today’s safety reps will be horrified at the sight of the ’topper’ who takes ‘working at heights’ to a whole new level, while the environmentalists will shudder at the thought of felling these ancient trees. It was all so simple back then … or was it?
