Witzenberg Properties (Pty) Ltd is seeking a Forester to manage harvesting and silviculture operations in our forestry department. You will be based in the Koue Bokkeveld, Ceres. As a member of our timber division team, you will play a critical role in delivering productivity, quality, environmental stewardship, and community engagement across our plantations.

The successful candidate will:

  • Plan, coordinate and supervise timber harvesting operations.
  • Manage all silvicultural operations.
  • Fire protection and fire prevention programs.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, environmental legislation and recognised forestry standards.
  • Implement a maintenance plan for forest roads and boundaries.
  • Ensure compliance with maintenance schedules of forestry equipment and machinery.
  • Assist in preserving biodiversity by implementing the forest environmental management plan, which includes alien invasive plant control.
  • Record and monitor rare, threatened, and endangered species.  
  • Maintain accurate records and generate regular reports of safety inspections and production targets achieved.
  • Promote environmental awareness and manage relationships with all affected stakeholders.
  • Manage risk and security aspects of the forest estate.
  • Mentor, upskill and supervise staff.

This position requires an energetic, motivated and well-organised person.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • National Diploma (NQF6) in Forestry/ Nature Conservation or equivalent qualification within the related field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in Forest Management, including harvesting and silviculture operations.
  • Knowledge of all relevant legislation, such as the National Forests Act, 1998 (Act No 84 of 1998) (NFA), National Veld Forest Fire Act, 1998 (Act No 101 of 1998) (NVFFA), National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEMBA).
  • Strong people management, leadership, planning and organisational skills.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to motivate staff.
  • Proficient in MS Office, in particular Excel.
  • A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within the operational area. 
  • Must be willing to travel and accompany the harvesting team throughout the Boland area if necessary.
  • Perform standby duties during fire season.
  • Fluent in Afrikaans and proficient in English.
